Overview
This Privacy Policy explains what information Reunite collects when you use the app, how we use it, and — because Reunite is a community lost-and-found platform — when and how it's shared with other users. By using Reunite you agree to the collection and use of information as described here.
Information We Collect
Account information: your name, email address, and phone number when you register or edit your profile. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email address from that service.
Pet report content: your pet's name, species, sex, description, photo, the date it was last seen, any landmarks you add, whether you offer a reward, and the location where it was lost or found. This location is the exact point you choose: your device's current position if you tap "Use my location", or the spot you pick on the map. It is shown on a map to other users as part of your report, so you may prefer to pick a nearby public spot rather than your home.
Your device's location: when you use the Home feed or tap "Use my location", the app reads your device's location to show nearby reports and how far away they are. It does this only while you are using the app, never in the background, and we don't store that position except as described under "Approximate area" below and in any report you post.
Approximate area: to send the daily summary of new pets reported near you, the app remembers a rough area (about 5 km across) where you last opened the Home feed. It isn't your exact position. You can turn the summary off in Profile > Notifications.
Photos: any photo you upload for a pet report or as your profile picture.
Content you post: comments, replies, and votes on pet reports, any safety reports you submit, and the list of users you have blocked.
Help & Support requests: when you contact us from Profile > Help & Support, we collect the topic you choose (bug report, question, my account, or feedback), the subject and message you write, the email address on your account (so we can reply to you), your display name and account ID, and the app version and type of device (iOS or Android) you're using.
Device data: a push notification token for your device, so we can send you notifications; your phone's time zone, so the daily summary arrives in the evening your time; a check by Apple DeviceCheck (iOS) or Google Play Integrity (Android), through Firebase App Check, that confirms requests come from the genuine Reunite app (it doesn't identify you); and the device and advertising data that Google AdMob collects to show ads (see "Third-Party Services").
Usage and diagnostic data: app usage events (e.g. screen views and sign-ins), crash/error reports, and performance data (such as how long the app takes to start and how long network requests take), collected automatically via Firebase Analytics, Firebase Crashlytics, and Firebase Performance Monitoring to help us understand how the app is used and fix problems.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information above to operate the core functionality of Reunite: showing nearby lost/found pet reports, reviewing new and edited reports before they appear publicly, letting users comment on and discuss reports, sending in-app and push notifications about activity on your posts or comments, responding to your Help & Support requests, keeping the community safe, showing ads, and improving app reliability and performance.
Sharing Your Information With Other Users
Reunite is a community platform, so some of what you post is visible to other users by design: your display name, profile photo, pet reports (including the photo and the exact location on a map), and comments are visible to anyone using the app. New pet reports, and some edits, are reviewed by our moderators before they appear. Comments and display names are checked automatically against a list of offensive words; a comment that matches is hidden and sent to our moderators.
Phone number sharing (opt-in): when you report a lost pet, you can turn on "Show my phone number". If you do, other users can see your number and call you from that report. It is off unless you turn it on, it applies only to that report, and your phone number is never shown to other users otherwise. You can turn it off at any time by editing the report, which removes your number from it. Closing a report or marking the pet as reunited hides the whole report from other users, but it stays stored, including a phone number you chose to show, and visible to you until you delete your account.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
Third-Party Services
Reunite uses the following third-party services, each of which processes limited data on our behalf: Firebase by Google (Authentication, Firestore database, Storage, Cloud Functions, Cloud Messaging, Remote Config, Analytics, Crashlytics, Performance Monitoring, and App Check), for account management, data storage, push notifications, diagnostics, and protecting our servers from abuse; Google Maps, to show and pick locations on a map; Google AdMob, to show ads; Gmail by Google, to deliver your Help & Support requests and new pet reports awaiting review to our inbox by email; and Retool, the tool our moderators use to review pet reports and safety reports.
Advertising: Google AdMob shows ads in the app and may collect your IP address, information about your device and the app, and your interactions with ads, to deliver and measure ads and prevent fraud. On Android this includes your device's advertising ID, which you can reset or delete in your device settings. On iOS, Reunite does not ask for permission to track you, so AdMob cannot use your device's advertising identifier. Where the law requires it, the app asks for your consent before personalized ads are shown. You can learn how Google uses this data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Each of these providers has its own privacy policy governing how it handles data.
Data Retention
We retain your account and content for as long as your account is active. Safety reports you submit against other users' content are retained even after your own account is deleted, so we can maintain a reliable moderation history — once your account is deleted, these reports are no longer linked to you. They are never publicly visible and are used only for safety and moderation purposes.
Help & Support requests you send us are kept while your account is active. When you delete your account, we remove your personal information from them within 30 days: your name, email address, account ID, and the subject and message you wrote, including the email copies in our support inbox. We keep only anonymous details (the topic, app version, device type, and date) so we can understand which issues come up most.
Closed and reunited reports stay stored until you delete your account, visible only to you and our moderators.
When something is deleted, a copy can remain in our database backups for up to 7 days before it is gone for good. Some records are deleted automatically after 7 days: notifications you clear, queued push notifications, and our records of the emails sent to our moderators about new reports and safety reports.
Account Deletion
You can delete your account at any time from Profile > Delete account. Deleting your account removes your profile, your pet reports, your comments and votes, and your notifications. Safety reports you filed and Help & Support requests you sent are kept only in anonymized form, with your personal information removed, as described above.
Children's Privacy
Reunite is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us using the details below and we will remove it.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
